Short answer

Men: 9 gold, 3 silver, 2 bronze in 18 tournaments. Women: 0 gold, 0 silver, 0 bronze in 6 tournaments. Counts run through Milano Cortina 2026.

The Soviet Union first played in 1956 and won gold. Across nine Olympics through 1988 it missed gold only twice: bronze in 1960 and silver in 1980, when it lost to the United States in Lake Placid.

After the Soviet Union dissolved, former Soviet players won 1992 as the Unified Team. Russia took silver in 1998 and bronze in 2002. Russian players won 2018 as Olympic Athletes from Russia and took silver in 2022 as the ROC. Russia was banned from the 2026 tournaments, and France took its place in both.

Questions people ask

How many Olympic hockey golds did the Soviet Union win?

7 in 9 tournaments, 1956 to 1988. Counting the Unified Team (1992) and OAR (2018), teams from the same program won nine.

Why did Russia play as OAR and ROC?

Russia’s national Olympic committee was suspended over doping, so Russian athletes competed as Olympic Athletes from Russia in 2018 and under the ROC name in 2022. In 2026 Russia was banned after its invasion of Ukraine.
